Edinburgh Festival in Numbers

Here are a few numbers associated with the various Edinburgh Festivals (often referred to simply as the Festival) which take place in the Scottish capital each August.

30,000 - The number of performances that are due to take place at this year's Edinburgh Fringe, which begins on August 7 and concludes on August 31.

5 - The first Edinburgh Art Festival was held in 2004, making the Festival 5 this year. This year's Festival begins on August 5 and ends on September 5.

453,670 - Edinburgh's population (2004 estimate - source: Encyclopedia Britannica Online). The city's population is widely reported to more than double over the course of the Festival.

200,000 - The approximate number of visitors that the Edinburgh International Book Festival (August 15-31) attracts each year.

5 - The number of major Festivals which do not take place exclusively, or at least partly in August. For the record these festivals are: Edinburgh Film Festival (June 16-27, 2010), Scottish International Storytelling Festival (October 23 - November 1), Edinburgh International Science Festival (April 3-17, 2010), Bank of Scotland Imaginate Festival (May 24-31, 2010) and of course, Hogmanay.

160,000 - The number of free maps that Edinburgh City Council are giving away, to help visitors get easily between festival venues, while work on the city's new tram network continues.

100million - The number of viewers from around the world who tune into watch the Edinburgh Military Tattoo (August 7 - August 29), on the Castle Esplanade.

11 - The number of consecutive years (including this one), in which the Edinburgh Military Tattoo has sold out.

£75million - the estimated value of the Fringe to Edinburgh's economy. (Source BBC News website).

75 - percentage share - of the year round festivals in the Scottish capital - that can be attributed to the Fringe, according to the BBC News website.

£5.95 - the cost of a Walk Talk Tour of Edinburgh. Both audio tours are narrated by Scot Graeme MacKenzie and can can be completed in two hours.
