St Andrew's Day in Edinburgh
Scotland's national flag is a white saltaire (X shaped cross)on a blue background. St Andrew was said to have been crucified on that type of cross. The saltaire proudly flies from flagpoles on many of Edinburgh's buildings.
The flag above is on George Street, close to St Andrew Square. It is hanging close to the Church of St Andrew and St George (formerly, simply St Andrew's Church). The church was the setting for the Disruption in 1843.
Visitors and locals alike will be able to enjoy the St Andrew's DO - a range of activities on Saturday, November 29 and Sunday, November 30, in West Princes Street Gardens.
In addition, on St Andrew's Day, visitors will be able to gain free admission to Edinburgh Castle from 09:30 to 17:00.
The National Museum of Scotland, on Chambers Street, will be hosting a variety of events to celebrate Scotland's patron saint on November 30.
One of the highlights on November 30 promises to be Clarinda, a musical which explores the relationship between Scotland's national bard, Robert Burns and Agnes Maclehose. The couple first met in 1787 and they corresponded, using the pseudonyms Clarinda and Sylvander. The musical is scheduled to begin at 16:30.
