York Grand Tour, But No Spot For Etty
Full size replicas of some of Europe's Old Masters' most famous paintings will be on display in the historic city of York until 28 September, 2008. The final four paintings are due to go on display tomorrow, Thursday, 19 June. Four of the paintings are provided by York Art Gallery, the bulk of the 45 pieces are recreations of paintings belonging to the National Gallery in London.Visitors to York to will be able to follow in the footsteps of aristocrats from days gone by, who used to embark on a Grand Tour of Europe. Going on the Grand Tour was a rite of passage for the legitimate sons of aristocrats, especially in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. Recreations of works by Van Gogh and Monet are included in the outdoor display.
The high standard of the recreations has been made possible by Hewlett-Packard. The company has collaborated with the National Gallery and the York Gallery to make the York Grand Tour possible.
Sadly, none of the pieces from York's most famous painter's collection, William Etty, are included in the outdoor extravaganza. Etty, who died in 1849, is best remembered for his historic paintings and his nude portraits. Independent travellers or interested natives from the historic capital of the White Rose County can learn more about Etty with the Best of York audio walking tour. He is commemorated with a statute in front of York Art Gallery. To hear an audio sample from the Best of York mp3 guided tour please click here.
