Fourth Plinth set for Gormley treatment

Anthony Gormley the artist famed for works such as the Angel of the North has won the commission for the much sought after Fourth Plinth in Trafalgar Square. Gormley's entry One and Other has been selected to occupy the plinth sometimes called the 'People's Plinth'. The sculptor wants a different person to stand, sit or otherwise occupy the plinth for each hour of the 100 day commission. If all goes to plan, 2,400 people will take part in the project.

The logistics of ensuring that participants get up and down safely from the Fourth Plinth have not been revealed. The start dates for One And Other and the other submission to win the seal of approval yesterday have not been published.

Yinka Shonibare secured the other commission with Nelson In A Bottle. His work will be a scale replica of Admiral Nelson's ship in a huge bottle. Admiral Nelson is depicted in Trafalgar Square's best known statue.
