Castle Stone Hits Big Screen
The Stone of Destiny, otherwise known as the Stone of Scone, is the star of a movie that will premiere at the Edinburgh International Film Festival. The Stone of Destiny is a potent symbol of Scottish nationalism. On Christmas Day, 1950, four students removed the Stone from its resting place at Westminster Abbey in London. Ian Hamilton, the ringleader of the group, told The Sunday Mail newspaper how he and his fellow thieves were able to remove the 330lb plus Stone. The group then drove the Stone out of England, before dumping it at the ruin of Arbroath Abbey.
Hamilton was joined by Gavin Vernon, Alan Stuart and Kay Matheson in the daring 'rescue attempt'/'burglary'. None of the group were prosecuted. Hamilton is to played by Robert Carlyle in a movie entitled, Stone of Destiny, which will have its premier at the Edinburgh International Film Festival on 21st June. Hamilton will be guest of honour at a reception two days later, which will take place at Edinburgh Castle. He has written a book 'The Stone of Destiny' which will be republished to coincide with the premiere and reception.
