Edinburgh in June
The Scottish capital will play host to stars from the silver screen this June. Traditionally, the Edinburgh Film Festival has taken place in August. This year the Edinburgh Film Festival will run from 18th June to 29th June. Stars expected to make the journey north, include Keira Knightley, Sienna Miller and Matthew Rhys. The trio all star in The Edge of Love a movie charting the turbulent life of the late Dylan Thomas.
Cinematic action not your cup of tea? This weekend May 31st - June 1st sees the final leg of the IRB World Sevens Series at Murrayfield. As the seven man version of rugby heads home to Scotland. Rugby Sevens is a Scottish invention. The game was first played in the town of Melrose in 1883, as a fund raising exercise for Melrose RFC. Fifteen a side matches would have taken to long to complete, so it was decided to reduce the number of players on each side and the length of the games.
Sir Walter Scott, the author of the so-called Waverley Novels, drew inspiration from the Scottish Borders. As the pioneer of the historical novel, he made his mark in Edinburgh society, too. Scott kept his identity - as the author of the Waverley Novels, which included Rob Roy, The Heart of Midlothian and Ivanhoe - a closely guarded secret for many years.
